Book Review– Stencil Pirates
By Josh MacPhee
Soft Skull Press-Published 2003Pirates are cool. I’m always concerned about anything incorporating the word ‘pirate’ into their title or descriptor, because I fear it won’t live up to the high standards of pirate-like qualities I expect. I anticipate a huge let-down from the first “yar.” Thankfully, this book doesn’t disappoint. Stencil artists can be as cool as pirates, and this book is full of great examples of that. Stencil Pirates features thousands of black and white and color images from all over the world, and also offers a great “how-to” section. If you’re interested in getting a message out, or you’re just curious to see what others feel strongly enough about to break the law, better add this to your library.
I really hope author Josh MacPhee sent a copy to George W. He looks nice with horns! I smile at the thought of W. getting an unbiased representation of what real folks think of him. From three continents. Yeah, W. - that “pebble in the pond” ripple effect theory, your regime is proof of that.
This book also delivers a succinct description of the power of stencil art:By painting a street stencil an artist transcends the rules of standard and acceptable behavior. This give’s the artist’s expression some extra weight. When a person comes across a stencil painted on a bus stop shelter, not only do they read what the stencil says, but they also see that someone has broken the rules to put that stencil there.Nice, right? Enough to make a pirate proud.
